The ice maker stopped and everything else in the fridge is fine

Ice makers fail more often than the refrigerators they live in. The good news is that most of the causes are outside the ice maker itself.

An ice maker combines water, sub-zero temperatures, a small heater and a motor in one assembly the size of a shoebox. It is the most failure-prone component in a modern refrigerator by some distance.

But before assuming the unit is dead, work through the things that stop a perfectly good ice maker from cycling.

1. Is the arm or switch in the on position?

Every ice maker has a shut-off, either a wire bail arm that lifts, or a switch on the front of the module. A bail arm knocked upward by someone reaching past it stops production instantly and silently.

This is the first thing we check on site, and it is the answer more often than anyone wants to admit.

2. Is the freezer cold enough?

An ice maker will not cycle until the mould reaches about 15°F. If your freezer has drifted up to 10 or 15°F, which is still cold enough to keep food frozen, the ice maker may never trigger.

Put a thermometer in the freezer. You want 0°F. If it is higher, fix the freezer and the ice will come back on its own.

3. Did you change the water filter recently?

Changing a filter introduces air into the line. Until that air is purged, the fill valve may not deliver a full charge of water.

Run four or five litres through the dispenser, then give the ice maker a full cycle. This resolves a surprising proportion of "it stopped after I changed the filter" calls.

4. Is the fill tube frozen?

The fill tube is the short plastic pipe that delivers water into the mould. If the mould overfills, or the fill tube heater fails, water freezes in the tube and blocks the next fill.

Look for a plug of ice at the back of the ice maker where the tube enters. A hairdryer on low will clear it. If it returns within a week, the heater or the valve is the actual fault.

5. Is the water supply reaching the valve?

The inlet valve is at the back of the refrigerator. If the saddle valve on the supply line has been partly closed, or a kink developed when the fridge was last pulled out, pressure drops and the ice maker underfills.

The symptom is hollow, undersized or crescent-shaped cubes rather than no ice at all.

6. Has it jammed?

Cubes that do not release properly bridge together into a solid mass, and the ejector arm stalls against it. Empty the bin completely, break up anything solid, and let it run a full cycle.

When it is the ice maker itself

If all six check out, the fault is in the module: the ejector motor, the thermostat, or the optical sensor that tells the machine the bin is full. On many models the module is replaced as a unit rather than repaired, and it is a straightforward same-visit job.

Standalone and undercounter machines

Scotsman, Hoshizaki, U-Line and Marvel machines are a different category. They have their own condensers, water pumps and cleaning cycles, and roughly half the calls we attend on them turn out to be scale build-up rather than a failed part.

If yours is producing cloudy, soft or slow ice, it probably needs descaling rather than repairing.

FAQ

How much ice should a fridge ice maker make?

Around three to four pounds a day on a domestic unit, in batches of eight to ten cubes every 90 minutes or so. Well below that and the fill valve or water pressure is the place to look.

Why does the ice taste bad?

Almost always the water filter, or a supply line that has sat unused. Ice also absorbs odours from the freezer, so old ice sitting in the bin picks up whatever is around it.

Is it worth replacing an ice maker module?

Usually yes. It is a fraction of the cost of a refrigerator and it is a single-visit repair on most models.

My ice maker floods the freezer.

Turn off the water supply at the valve behind the fridge and book a visit. That is an inlet valve that is no longer closing, and it will keep going until it is stopped.
