Built-in ice makers take under an hour. Standalone machines take longer.
Ice maker repair across Greater Boston
Ice makers fail more often than the refrigerators they live in, because they combine water, freezing temperatures and a small motor in one assembly. Most of the time the fault is upstream: a water inlet valve that no longer opens, or a fill tube frozen solid.
Standalone and undercounter ice machines from Scotsman, Hoshizaki and U-Line are a different animal. They have their own condensers, pumps and cleaning cycles, and about half the calls we attend on them are scale build-up rather than a broken part.
Before you book, check one thing: if the freezer is not holding below 5°F, no ice maker will cycle properly. Fixing the freezer fixes the ice.

Ice maker repair symptoms we see every week
Recognise one of these and you already know most of what a technician needs to hear on the phone.
No ice at all
Water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, or a module that has stopped cycling.
Ice cubes are hollow or too small
Low water pressure at the valve, or a partly blocked supply line or filter.
Ice maker keeps jamming
The ejector arm or the mould heater. Cubes that do not release properly bridge together and lock the mechanism.
Water leaking into the freezer
An inlet valve that no longer closes fully, or a misaligned fill tube spraying past the mould.
Ice tastes or smells wrong
Almost always the water filter, or a supply line that has sat unused. Rarely a fault in the appliance.
Standalone machine producing cloudy ice
Scale build-up in the evaporator plate. These machines need a descaling cycle on a schedule.
On the van
These are the parts we carry as stock, which is why most repairs finish without a second visit. Built-in ice makers take under an hour. Standalone machines take longer.
- Ice maker modules and ejector assemblies
- Water inlet valves
- Fill tube heaters
- Optical and bail-arm sensors
- Water filters and supply lines
- Pumps and float switches for standalone machines
How a repair visit actually goes
No four-hour windows, no diagnosis-by-phone, no price that changes once the panel is off.
- 1
You tell us what it is doing
Three questions online, or one phone call. The more specific the symptom, the better the odds the right part rides along on the first visit.
- 2
We confirm a two-hour window
Not a morning, not an all-day wait. We call back to agree a window and ring again when the van is close.
- 3
Diagnosis, then a flat price
The technician finds the fault and quotes the whole repair before touching anything. If you decline, you pay the diagnostic and nothing more.
- 4
Repaired, with 90 days behind it
Most repairs finish in the same visit. Parts and labour carry a 90-day warranty.

What people said after a ice maker repair
Every review below is copied word for word from the company's public Thumbtack profile.
Thank you so much! Great customer service. Came and fixed our washer, looks good as new! Hire him
Tim was very professional and did his job correctly but was sent a defective part. Ramin came and replaced the defective part and my stove works again. After an initial problem that wasn't their fault, masterfix did an excellent job. I would not hesitate to use them again. Thanks Tim and Ramin!
My dryer was fixed immediately and the contractor gave me filter change recommendations. However, it was not cheap.
Master fix came out quickly and got my stove working with no fuss. Great service
He was very responsive to messages and was available for a quick diagnosis and a fix. Did a great job!
Highly recommend for appliance needs! Came same day and fixed washer for a fair price! I highly recommend for any appliance needs!
Ice maker repair questions
- My ice maker stopped after I changed the water filter.
- Air in the line. Run four or five litres through the dispenser to purge it, then give the ice maker a full cycle.
- How much ice should a refrigerator ice maker produce?
- Roughly three to four pounds a day on a domestic unit. If yours has fallen well below that, the fill valve or water pressure is the place to look.
- Do you service commercial ice machines?
- We service undercounter and light commercial machines in cafés and small restaurants, including Scotsman and Hoshizaki.
- Why does the ice smell like the food in my freezer?
- Ice absorbs odours. That is a sign the ice is sitting too long, or that something in the freezer is not sealed.
