Sub-Zero ice maker repair
Sub-Zero built the market for built-in refrigeration, and a well-maintained unit lasts twenty years or more. They are worth repairing at ages where a mass-market fridge would be replaced.
Standalone and undercounter ice machines from Scotsman, Hoshizaki and U-Line are a different animal. They have their own condensers, pumps and cleaning cycles, and about half the calls we attend on them are scale build-up rather than a broken part.

Ice maker repair symptoms on a Sub-Zero
These are the ice maker faults we see on every brand. The Sub-Zero-specific ones are listed underneath.
No ice at all
Water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, or a module that has stopped cycling.
Ice cubes are hollow or too small
Low water pressure at the valve, or a partly blocked supply line or filter.
Ice maker keeps jamming
The ejector arm or the mould heater. Cubes that do not release properly bridge together and lock the mechanism.
Water leaking into the freezer
An inlet valve that no longer closes fully, or a misaligned fill tube spraying past the mould.
Ice tastes or smells wrong
Almost always the water filter, or a supply line that has sat unused. Rarely a fault in the appliance.
Standalone machine producing cloudy ice
Scale build-up in the evaporator plate. These machines need a descaling cycle on a schedule.
What tends to fail on Sub-Zero
- Dual compressor and evaporator faults
- Condenser coils clogging behind the grille
- Vacuum door seals hardening
- Ice maker modules in the 600 and 700 series

Thank you so much! Great customer service. Came and fixed our washer, looks good as new! Hire him
Tim was very professional and did his job correctly but was sent a defective part. Ramin came and replaced the defective part and my stove works again. After an initial problem that wasn't their fault, masterfix did an excellent job. I would not hesitate to use them again. Thanks Tim and Ramin!
My dryer was fixed immediately and the contractor gave me filter change recommendations. However, it was not cheap.
Questions we get asked
- What goes wrong with Sub-Zero ice makers?
- Dual compressor and evaporator faults is the fault we attend most on this combination. Sub-Zero built the market for built-in refrigeration, and a well-maintained unit lasts twenty years or more. They are worth repairing at ages where a mass-market fridge would be replaced.
- My ice maker stopped after I changed the water filter.
- Air in the line. Run four or five litres through the dispenser to purge it, then give the ice maker a full cycle.
- How much ice should a refrigerator ice maker produce?
- Roughly three to four pounds a day on a domestic unit. If yours has fallen well below that, the fill valve or water pressure is the place to look.
- Do you service commercial ice machines?
- We service undercounter and light commercial machines in cafés and small restaurants, including Scotsman and Hoshizaki.
- Do you carry Sub-Zero parts for this?
- We stock the common failures listed on this page. Anything model specific is ordered after the diagnosis, and we tell you the wait before you commit. Every part carries 90 days of warranty.
