Whirlpool refrigerator repair

Whirlpool builds the most repairable appliances we see. Parts are widely stocked, diagrams are honest, and a fifteen-year-old Whirlpool is usually worth fixing.

Most no-cooling calls come down to four things: a blocked defrost system icing over the evaporator, a failed condenser fan, a start relay that has given up on the compressor, or a control board that stopped calling for cooling. A technician can tell these apart in about twenty minutes with a meter and a temperature probe, and three of the four are same-visit repairs.

Refrigerator repair symptoms on a Whirlpool

These are the refrigerator faults we see on every brand. The Whirlpool-specific ones are listed underneath.

  • Fridge is warm but the freezer is cold

Almost always airflow: a frosted-over evaporator, a failed evaporator fan, or a stuck damper between the two compartments.

  • Nothing is cooling at all

Points at the sealed system, the start relay or the main control board. We check the easy and cheap causes before condemning the compressor.

  • Water pooling under the crisper or on the floor

A blocked defrost drain is the usual cause, and it is a straightforward clear-and-flush. A split water line or a failed inlet valve is the other.

  • Ice maker stopped filling or is jamming

Inlet valve, fill tube heater, or the module itself. Freezer temperature that has drifted above 5°F will also stop an ice maker cold.

  • Loud buzzing, clicking or humming

Clicking every few minutes is a start relay failing to start the compressor. Buzzing usually comes from a condenser fan hitting ice or debris.

  • Doors sweating or seals no longer sealing

A door gasket that no longer holds a dollar bill lets humid air in, and the compressor then runs constantly to keep up.

What tends to fail on Whirlpool

  • Dryer thermal fuses tripping from restricted vents
  • Washer drain pumps blocked by coins and clothing
  • Refrigerator defrost thermostats failing
  • Dishwasher door latch switches wearing out

  • Ramen came out the same day, diagnosed the problem and brought it back to life. He has all the right tools and knows how to use them. The problem was hard to diagnose after the initial repair but he nailed it. He's friendly and professional. He is definitely worth hiring. He will be my first call from now on when I need an appliance repaired.

Questions we get asked

What goes wrong with Whirlpool refrigerators?
Dryer thermal fuses tripping from restricted vents is the fault we attend most on this combination. Whirlpool builds the most repairable appliances we see. Parts are widely stocked, diagrams are honest, and a fifteen-year-old Whirlpool is usually worth fixing.
How quickly can someone come out for a fridge that has stopped cooling?
Refrigerators get scheduling priority. Call before noon on a weekday and there is usually a same-day slot; the rest go to the next morning.
Is it worth repairing a refrigerator that is over ten years old?
It depends on the fault, not the age. A fan motor or a defrost heater on a well-built ten-year-old fridge is worth doing. A sealed-system leak on the same unit usually is not, and we will say so.
My fridge is cold but the ice maker died. Is that a separate repair?
Usually yes, and it is a common one. The ice maker has its own valve, heater and module, and any of the three can fail while the rest of the appliance runs perfectly.
Do you carry Whirlpool parts for this?
We stock the common failures listed on this page. Anything model specific is ordered after the diagnosis, and we tell you the wait before you commit. Every part carries 90 days of warranty.
